Mastering the Secrets of Self-Care

Setting intentions, self-inquiry, and scheduling space for down time.

Back in 2020, in the heart of the COVID pandemic, I set out to film the second season of Lofti TV. I wanted to capture the secrets of some of the most successful female entrepreneurs I knew…and what I found was no surprise: self-care routines enabled their success.

Self-Care Leads to Big Success

Since our conversations nearly three years ago, these women’s professional and personal lives have shifted and evolved, yet their individual commitments to their personal boundaries, laser-like focus toward what they envision, and constant iteration practices haven’t changed.

There are common themes among the approaches they take to relationships, life, and their work. Their unique histories shape their individual pathways, and I have been personally inspired by the ideas they shared.

  1. Set Intentions: Annually and Big-Picture Vision

How you can create a practice:

  • Write it down

  • Set clear milestones

  • Gather resources 

  • Revisit goals once a quarter

Key Insight: Don’t be afraid to iterate or change course (tasks and processes) while holding your intention at the forefront of decision-making. Continue to stay in tune with your milestones and timelines, and make small adjustments while staying true to your vision.

2. Self-Inquiry: Constantly and Honestly Evaluate Personal/Professional Balance

How you can create a practice:

  • Daily meditation

  • Journal reflection

  • Trial new approaches

  • Awareness of energy

Key Insight: Consider the big things and the tiny things that go into your daily routine. Follow and reflect on where you put your energy and if it's aligned and placed toward the intentions you set. Cut out what doesn’t work, try new ideas, and simplify where possible.

3. Schedule Space for Downtime on a Consistent Basis

How you can create a practice:

  • Understand what self-care looks like for you

  • Schedule time (in your calendar)

  • Make it a priority (keep the commitment)

  • Stay focused on why it is important to your well-being

Key Insight: In order to hustle, energy is required. Working smarter means making a commitment to yourself and taking the downtime needed to regulate your energy. From dedicated vacation time to self-care treatment, time to move, or getting creative by taking a couple of hours off from work when you can, it is essential to prioritize your needs.
